PCSO meeting 3.5.18
Attendance at meeting, Iilyas, Joshua, Margot, Delikate, Ethan, Isla, Esme, Harry, Emily and Mrs Flanagan
Agenda
1. We looked at the school litter posters that have been created by the PCSO team. They have been colour copied, laminated and will be put up around the school during lunchtime today. The children were pleased with the results.
2. We discussed last weeks litter pick and the children were pleased that there was not much rubbish in the school grounds. Today will complete another litter pick at lunchtime.
3. TF told the children that PC Dakin and PCSO Evans had won the Diamond Award at the West Midlands Police Awards because of the work that they do with schools and communities. The children were delighted! TF told them that as a 'thank you' PC Dakin would arrange a visit for the PCSOs to the visit the Lord Mayors Chamber. They were very excited about the prospect. TF will gather details from PC Dakin at the next visit.
4. The PCSO team watched the Abbey Junior PCSO video that documented the PCSO journey through 2017 - 2018. This can be found on the school website under 'video resources'.
On Monday 23rd April, Elyshia from Litter Watch presented an assembly alongside our Junior PSCOs to promote the message of putting our litter in the bin. In Sandwell alone £800,000.00 is spent on cleaning up our streets, parks and woodlands. If we all play our part in disposing of our rubbish responsibly then we all create a cleaner and more pleasant community to live in.
The Junior PCSOs will begin this week with our playground litter picks and our posters around the school we will encourage all children to 'bin it, not drop it!'.
A good tip from Elyshia was to have a carrier bag in the car, especially on long journeys and put all the rubbish into the bag for easy disposal. Thank you to Litter Watch and Alyshia for all of your hard work!
Date of meeting 19.4.18 and Star of the Week 20.4.18
The Abbey Junior PCSOs decided to run a fun and creative competition to keep children safe on our roads. The team ask children to design an eye catching banner to promote safe parking and safe driving near our school. The winning entry is to have their design put onto a banner which will be displayed on the railings outside of the school grounds.
The Abbey PCSOs met to judge the Road Safety Banner Competition and considered all entries. Two winning posters were chosen which promoted the message of 'safer parking' and 'driving safely near schools'. The winners were Pearl Almeida (Year 5) and Hannah Price (Year 3), well done! There were some worthy runners up too who created some wonderful designs; so a big 'well done' to Brooke Millership-Fulford, Marcus Lea, Pheobe Khisna, Amelie Wilkes, Aimee Laukam, Ronan, Maddison Kelly and Sam Hewings. The runners up and winners were celebrated at the school 'Star of the Week' assembly on Friday 20th April.

Alicia Wingfield from Litter Watch introduced herself to the PCSO team. She explained that Litter Watch was a charity with 4 staff members. They have three main foci which include; litterwatch, Eco Bus and the Big Spring Clean. Currently they have a budget to launch and recruit regional 'Litter Watch Champions'. Abbey has been approached by the Litter Watch team to work with the PCSO team in helping our local community.
Alicia talked about the effects of litter on the environment. The children were confident in talking about their understanding of the damaging effect of litter too. She explained that the Litter Watch Champions could do a wonderful service in promoting good habits and cleaning up our local area. The PCSOs felt that they could help.
The Litter Watch Champions would be required to do monthly/termly litter patrols around the school and its grounds. They would be provided with their own uniform and equipment. The children could choose buddies and parents to help them. The times of the litter patrols would vary over the year to suit the children.
Alicia told the children that they would deserve a reward at the end of their service and that she could arrange a 'litter watch' party with other communities. The children thought that this was a wonderful idea!
We will begin our Litter Watch Focus in Summer 1. This will begin with a launch assembly during the week of April 16th. On 23rd April the Litter Watch team will present an assembly about litter.
During 'Abbey Environment Week' on Monday 4th June there will be a further assembly about Recycling with the Litter Watch mascots.
The children have made posters to promote a cleaner environment and an improved attitude towards litter. Alicia said that the completed posters could be displayed on the Eco Bus.

Activity 1:
We reviewed the parking patrol meeting and exercise, with PC Dakin and PCSO Evans on Tuesday 23rd and the actions that followed:
We sent letters to two parents that we identified. These parents will receive the letter through the post.
The other registrations that we took have been sent to PC Dakin for her to put through the West Midlands Police Traffic System. They will be contacted once we have their identity.
TF has sent an email to 'Tech. UK - where we observed a driver who parked on the corner and on double yellow lines.
PC Dakin suggested that we combat speeding motorists who ignore the 20 mile per hour speed limit with a 'Community Speed Watch' exercise. Children would use hand held devices that measure the speed of motorists.
Children would like to create large banners that remind motorists to park and drive safely near our school. Mr. Edwards explained that we had some metal signs that he could move into a more prominent position.
PC Dakin discussed the idea of the 'Court Room Scenario' organised through Karen Hale, where highways work with children to tackle parents who ignore the rules.
Children want to organise an assembly with PC Dakin and PCSO Evans.
Actions:
TF to write to Karen Hale and discuss the idea of Community Speed Watch and 'Court Room Scenario'. How can we organise this?
Mr. Edwards to move metal signs into a more prominent position.
TF to talk to RK about a road safety banner
TF to talk to PC Dakin and PCSO Evans about an assembly during the week of 5th February. Could they do the 8th?
Activity 2:
We read letter from 'cross parent' (Mr Marks) and I explained my response on behalf of the PCSOs.
Actions:
We will reply to the cross parent and give him a copy of the Road Safety Abbey Lens Edition.
Activity 3:
We planned a Road Safety Abbey Lens Edition - TF asked the children about the contributions that they would like to make. This dedicated 'road safety' edition will go out on February 2nd 2018.
The children had the following ideas
Letters from parents
Parent Power Give parents ideas of how they could support us everyday Ilyas and Esme
Joshua - Road Safety Poster
Margot - Poster. To write a persuasive text to encourage parents to park safely and share your observations.
Ilyas and Ethan make a parking power design sticker for our cars or a badge for parents and children to wear. Ethan to share ideas and write a paragraph and facts.
Esme -Poster
Xavier - bullet points on how to keep safe for children

Date of PCSO meeting: 18.1.18
Attendance at meeting:
Esme, Millie, Joshua, Margot, Ilyas, Delikate, Isla, Harry, Ethan and Xaviar
Mrs Flanagan
Activity 1:
Welcome back to our first meeting of 2018. The group welcomed Emily who represents 4RP since Mekhi has left. The PCSO applauded her on her new role.
Activity 2:
Mrs Flanagan asked the children who took part in the last Road Safety PCSO exercise and what they observed. Children reported that they saw speeding motorists, inconsiderate parents who parked on double yellow lines, zig-zag lines and in the middle of the road.
TF shared the school letter that the PCSO had written which was delivered to all offending drivers. The PCSO discussed the embarrassment caused by parents and how some of our pupils must feel when their families are observed parking in this manner. We all agreed that we will be sensitive and kindly when approaching families and children. We agreed that we want to help in the best way possible but get our message across that their choices could lead to a child being seriously hurt or even killed.
We discussed the current 20 mile an hour speed limit around the school and how that law could potentially save a child's life.
Margot stated that she was aware that the PCSO letter that had been sent for one particularly family had made no difference because the parent still parks in the middle of Barclay Road when she drops off her child in the morning. The PCSO team thought of additional things that the school should do in this type of scenario. It was suggested that;
We have a dedicated 'Road Safety Abbey Lens Edition' warning parents of our intention to send on details to West Midlands Police and of our intention to publish full registration numbers
After a warning the full registration numbers are placed on the school newsletter
Through the newsletter parents are encouraged to report unsafe parking and dangerous driving to 111
Create 'Parent Power' - who would become an extension to the PCSO team and report parents and vehicle registration plates or take details and photos.
Invite parents to 'Parents for safer parking' events. They can wear hi-vis vests and take down details and promote safer parking.
Photographs of offending vehicles are placed on the newsletter
Mr Kentish or PC Jo or PCSO Jayne should call the parents
All offending motorists registration numbers are given to the police
Action: TF will raise these suggestions with the head teacher and agree on the best way forward.
Activity 3:
A parent had written to the road safety team in Sandwell, regarding her concerns about the lack of care shown by parents who park near the school and the disregard by some road users for the Zebra Crossing. The email also included information on how there was a near miss on the Zebra Crossing, including a verbal altercation. The children read the response from Andrena Hadley a SCP Supervisor.
The PCSO team agreed that another Safer Parking Patrol was necessary and to involve PC Jo and PCSO Jayne. They would also like to write to the Andrena and tell her what the PCSO team have been doing to help the situation.
Action: Write to Andrena Hadley. TF to write a DRAFT version which represents the children's thoughts and ideas (see above) .
Next Session:
TF explained the forthcoming activities and events. This included the role of the current PCSOs to train and recruit the next group of PCSOs for the school. Each child will pair with another PCSO and present to a class in another year group.
Next week we will meet at 2pm on Tuesday 23rd with PC Jo and PCSO Jayne and discuss our Litter Campaign. Then at 3pm we will complete our Safer Parking and Road Safety Patrol.
Look at organising a 'Parent Power' event that involves lots of parent volunteers to promote safer parking.
Next Thursday we will meet to follow up on our parking patrol event. We will consider our next steps. Consider the content of our letter to Andrena Hadley - read the DRAFT version.
Junior PCSO's and the Health and Safety Team take part in 'Safer Six'.
On the morning of Tuesday 31st October 2017 our Junior PCSO's and the Junior Health and Safety Team, along with Mrs Hunter and Mrs Flanagan were invited to join local police officers PC James and PC Jo, PCSO Jayne, Alicia and the Litter Watch team and Raj Mehmi from Sandwell Council to do a litter pick around the school and Warley Woods. It was all part of a community event called 'The Safer6 Campaign'. It runs for 6 weeks and organisations work together to make Sandwell a safer and cleaner place to live.
Armed with litter pickers, ten adults and a bunch of enthusiastic children, we made our way up Barclay Road, through the pathways in Warley Woods and along Abbey Road. Whilst we filled bags with a variety of rubbish (including a red bra!) the Litter Watch team commented on how our local area was kept remarkably tidy by our considerate residents and community. Well done Bearwood!
The Junior PCSO's and the Health and Safety team are on a mission to help educate all the children at Abbey about the dangers and damage to the environment that careless litter dropping creates. The PCSO's will be leading an assembly and sharing posters around the school. Joshua Sharpe, with support from the PCSO's and Health and Safety team has purchased Abbey litter pickers and will be using these in our playground. Thank you to all the children who are working hard to make our school a safe and clean place to learn!
Introducing the Abbey Junior PCSO's
The school has selected a group of children from many that expressed an interest to join a year long PCSO scheme (June 2017 until June 2018). They have the qualities, attributes and interest in the scheme to make it a successful and rewarding experience.
Over the next six weeks they will be trained by PC JO and PCSO Jayne from Smethwick Police Station and they will meet each Wednesday in the Zone with a representative from school. At the end of their training there will be a Graduation Assembly. This assembly is on Thursday 22nd June 2017 at 9am until 9.20am.
A brief overview of their tasks include; School Safety Patrols to encourage safe parking; approaching parents/carers regarding their manner of parking and then the issuing of specially designed tickets, promoting the schools' anti-bullying message 'Abbey Let's Start S.T.O.P' (Several Times On Purpose, Start Telling Other People and 'Stop! I don't like that'), working with the Abbey Friendship Buddies and links with the Big Spring Clean to create a safer and pleasant environment. Junior PCSO’s wear a high visibility tabard with a branded peaked cap and will be in the company of officers at all times.
This is the first year that we have worked with our local police force and we hope to work with them each year to create this worthwhile, community experience. If you are interested in becoming an Abbey Junior PCSO, then apply next Spring for the opportunity to join a great team!

TF looked at permission slips and parent/carer consent forms. DM asked TF to ask at the office for her permission slip.
TF action: collect from Junior Office
Children action: to share the website with their parents/carers
Activity 2:
Focus for Session 2: Road Safety and Car Seats
Question 1: What signs have seen on the road? The children recalled the signs that they have seen around the school and near their home. They referenced the booklet to understand the meanings for each sign.
Question 2: How old do you have to be or which height do you need to be (by law) to not use a car seat?
The children were set the task of finding out this information last week. Ilyas suggested that the age was 12 but the group were unsure about the law around the height of a child.
The team used the internet to research and came up with the following information around the law about car seats from the Which website:
UK law states that children must use a child car seat until they're 12 years old or 135cm/4ft 5in tall, whichever comes first.
However, safety experts recommend that you use a child car seat for all children under 150cm/4ft 11in. This height is the legal requirement in Ireland and also some European countries, such as Germany and France. For children weighing more than 36kg (5st 10lb) but under 150cm/4ft 11in, our advice is to go by height. (Which 2017)
The children revised the information and were told that if we learn this information we could offer advice to others on how to be safe in cars.
What Next?
The children ended the session by talking about the purpose of their role in school, once they graduate from the programme. TF explained that the children would design their work to meet the needs of the school. TF asked how the team could keep the children safe in our school. Their suggestions were:
Playground patrols, working with the friendship buddies
Litter picking on the school site
Safe parking
Internet safety - helping in assembly and spreading the SMART message
TF thanked the group for their great ideas!
Task for next week:
All bring folders
Share knowledge about car safety and booster seats
Consider the Road Safety Patrol task and Big Spring Clean task and find out information from PCSO Jayne and PC Jo.
Junior PCSO’s - 07.06.17
Children were asked to share the rules for the Group.
Children revisited the Phonetic Alphabet and used it to spell their first name. They were really good at this and some even went on to spell their surnames.
They revisited the previous session with Mrs. Flanagan, where children looked at the laws behind wearing seat belts and using child car seats. Questions were asked on these laws and the children were able to answer the majority. Jo and Jayne gave additional information where it was needed. There was an emphasis on safety / keeping safe in cars.
Interestingly, for children under 14 years old, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure the passenger is wearing a seat belt. However, over 14 years of age, it is their responsibility and they can be prosecuted – this astonished the children. The children were given an information sheet on the laws for using car seats and seat belts.
Being a Good Citizen
Children were given a questionnaire on being a good citizen where they were asked to identify what is and what isn’t a good citizen trait. Children talked about their answers and identified additional traits a good citizen would have.
A little Task (3 groups of 3)
Children had to divide strips of paper with ‘good’ and ‘bad’ citizen traits into two groups. The children worked quickly and co-operatively together, discussing their ideas. The children then shared their ideas with the rest of the group and agreed or disagreed with the ideas.
Next week’s session
Jayne and Jo explained that the children would be going outside of school, patrolling the road. They were asked what they thought they were going out to see. The children were able to come up with a few ideas, but needed some guidance from Jayne and Jo. They talked about looking for zig zag lines, double and single lines, the adults use of car seats and seat belts and parking etc.
Children were reminded that they will need their Consent Forms for going out of school next week.
Children will meet at 2.30 pm instead of 1.00 pm.
Children will also learn about road safety.1`
PCSO meeting 5 - 14.6.17
Attendance at meeting:
PCSO Jayne and PC Jo, Mrs Sharp, Mrs Slimm and Mrs Flanagan
Mekhi, Esme, Joshua, Margot, Ilyas, Delikate, Harry, Isla, Ethan and Xaviar
Activity 1:
Introduction
Children discussed the purpose of today's Road Safety Patrol with PC Jo and PCSO Jayne. The school and PCSO team are keeping the area around our school safe, by reminding parents and carers about safe parking near our school.
PC Deakin shared the 'official warning' documentation with the children and guided them through how to complete it. Each child was given a clip board with documentation attached.
The team set rules on how to approach parents and carers and the reasons for this, which included; unsafe parking, non-compliance with the laws of the road; such as parking on double yellow lines, parking on the zig zag lines, parking in the middle of the road and not using seat belts or car seats.
TF set expectations of behaviour and conduct.
Risk assessment was shared with adults.
Activity 2:
Main Activity
Teams were created with two or three children with an adult.
Children set up in positions around the school; Barclay Road adjacent to the school, the corner of Barclay Road near the double yellow lines, the corner of Abbey Road by the double yellow lines and along Abbey Road near the bus stop.
The children issued around 8 'official warning' letters and there were lots of verbal reminders and conversations with adults.
Many parents acknowledged their mistake and responded well to the advice.
One parent was distressed, after receiving the official paper work and promised not to park without due care in future.
Two parents parked in the middle to the junction to collect passengers. Both were advised that this was unsafe practice.
One parent who stopped on the double yellow lines responded 'I am only waiting here for my child', he was advised that he was on yellow lines and asked to move his car to a safe collection point.
Next Steps: Following a successful activity the Junior PCSO's will build on this exercise and consider how we can do this on a regular basis. TF will complete risk assessments, collect parent permission slips and discuss the practicalities with the headteacher, Mrs Sharp and the Abbey Junior PCSO team. Photographs of the activity will be posted to the website.
Task for next week:
Final session of training with PC Jo and PCSP Jayne
Preparation for the Graduation Assembly on Thursday 22nd June - children to learn their pledge. A copy of this will be sent by PC Deakin and then forwarded on to the children to learn.
PCSO meeting 6 - 21.6.17
Attendance at meeting:
PCSO Jayne , Mrs Slimm and Angela from Litter Watch
Mekhi, Esme, Joshua, Margot, Ilyas, Delikate, Harry, Isla, Ethan and Xaviar
Activity 1:
Introduction
Mrs Flanagan reminded the children about the graduation assembly tomorrow and the children were told what would happen during the assembly. They practised the pledge:
Junior PCSO Pledge
I promise to serve West Midlands Police as a Junior PCSO with integrity and honour.
I will try my best at all times to be honest and trustworthy and to help everyone that I meet.
Activity 2:
Main Activity
PCSO Jayne introduced our visitor, Angela from Tipton Litter Watch. Angela spoke to the children about the damage that litter does to our community, how it damages the environment, injures animals and looks unsightly. She explained that it takes 2 weeks for an apple core to decompose, 5 - 10 years for a plastic crisp packet to decompose and 2, 000 years for a glass bottle to decompose. During this time our environment becomes polluted and animals are injured. She encouraged the children to help her make a difference and take pride in the environment in which they live.
The children were set a task to litter pick in the school playground and in the garden area, directly outside of the school on Barclay Road. The children got into pairs and were taught how to handle a little picker. One child assumed the role of litter picker, whilst the other held the rubbish collection bag. The children were asked to swap roles during the exercise. The children sadly found lots of rubbish on the school playground, namely sweet and crisp packets. On the path leading the garden the children found lots of cigarette ends. Angela suggested that she could help us source cigarette bins to discourage the litter on the floor.
At the end of the session the children put together their rubbish bags and we all agreed that there was a lot of rubbish!
Back in the classroom we considered how we could prevent people from dropping litter; ideas included making posters, purchasing cigarette bins and creating Litter Buddies who could support our PCSO's - all very exciting ideas and ones which will keep us busy!
Task for next week:
22nd June Graduation Assembly - learn the pledge and be smart as you are representing West Midlands Police and your school.
PC Jo Deakin to arrange CPR Heart Rate training on 30th June 2017 between 10am and 12pm with West Midlands Fire Service
Next PCSO meeting on 5th July at 12.15pm in the house/conservatory (non on 28th June because of Sports Day)
Develop PCSO ideas; more Safer Parking Patrols, collaboration with Friendship Buddies, supporting the anti bullying message - Let's Start Stop, Litter Buddies and helping at school events such as the forthcoming Summer Fayre.
Angela has sent a catalogue to Mrs Flanagan with the cigarette bins. The school can purchase these at a cost of approximately £30 pounds. The PCSOs could look at how we could fundraise for these and any other resources to help improve our environment.
PCSO Graduation Assembly on 22nd June 2017
Today our children had their Abbey Junior PCSO Graduation Assembly. The children really did have a great experience and were joined by their parents and carers. PCSO Jayne Evans, PC Jo Deakin and Sgt. Gary Capewell visited the school and awarded certificates and uniforms to the children for their hard work during the 6 week training programme. They complimented the conduct and commitment of our children and have said that they have all been amazing on the Junior PCSO programme, they added that is has been a pleasure to work with the children and our school.
We are looking forward to developing the team and we can't wait to get some of the children's fantastic ideas started which include: regular Safer Parking Patrols, Litter Watch Buddies - taking care of their environment in partnership with classmates, collaboration with the Friendship Buddies to prevent bullying and tackle friendship issues and support
at school events such as performances and the Summer Fayre.
We are looking forward to working with the children during their term of office and will support them in their PCSO duties from June 2017 to June 2018. If any children are interested in becoming a Junior PCSO from June 2018 until June 2019, applications for this will start in April 2018.
