Subject Specific Vocabulary - Spring Term

Assist your child in using and understanding the vocabulary they will come across in our non-core subjects this term.  To view the lists and definitions, click on the link below.

  Spring Term Vocabulary

This term our topic is 'Famous Scientists and Inventors'.

This spring term, our topic will be Famous Scientists and Inventors. The children will be learning about significant people from history who have made important discoveries or inventions and have had a positive impact on our world today.

Each week in our History lessons, the children will be introduced to a new scientist or inventor and will learn about who they were/are, what they did, and why they are significant. These lessons will be followed by a linked investigation in our Science lessons, where the children will explore simple experiments and carry out investigations connected to each person’s work. This will provide the children with the opportunity to work like scientists themselves – predicting, investigating, observing and recording.

To kick-start our learning, we will be welcoming Sublime Science into school for an exciting, hands-on day of science activities. This visit will help spark curiosity, encourage questioning, and inspire the children as they begin their journey into the world of science and invention.

In Spring 2, our focus will turn to Walt Disney, exploring who he was and why he is still so important today.  Through their learning, they will discover how one person’s creativity can inspire joy for millions of people around the world.

To find out more about our Year 1 curriculum for the autumn term, have a look at our curriculum leaflet which you will find in the 'Curriculum' section of our website.

Classes will have a weekly PE lesson. These will be on the following days:

Spring 1

1C - Tuesday
1P – Monday

1R - Wednesday

Please ensure that your child has a named P.E kit in school (white t-shirt, blue shorts and black pumps).  We ask that long hair is tied back, and that earrings are not worn on your child’s P.E days (children will have to wear tape over earrings if they have been left in on their P.E day).

Spellings

Spellings will be given out to the children every half-term and will be checked on Fridays. Children will be taught different spelling patterns and rules closely linked to our Phonics lessons at school. Additionally, you can help your child to learn the 'common exception words.' These are the words the children are expected to read and spell correctly. You will find links to the common exception and high frequency words, together with spelling lists, in the section below (useful links). Your child can also practise their spellings using SpellingFrame.co.uk which is a brilliant tool to help support your child's spelling at home. You will find their log-in details on the inside cover of their reading diary.

Reading books

Please hear your child read regularly throughout the week and comment in their reading diary.  It is essential that books are sent into school every day. It is beneficial for your child to have their reading books available on additional days, as we have a volunteer reader in school every Wednesday and staff may also hear children read throughout the week. Your child will have their reading books changed on the day shown below:

1C - Monday
1P – Tuesday
1R - Monday

Online Learning

Your child will have received individual login details for Purple Mash, Spelling Frame and Numbots. These can be found on the inside cover of their reading diary. These can be used to access many useful games and activities.
