Subject Specific Vocabulary - Summer Term

Assist your child in using and understanding the vocabulary they will come across in our non-core subjects this term.  To view the lists and definitions, click on the link below.

Year 1 Summer Vocabulary Booklet

This term our topic is 'The Animal Kingdom'.

         Animal Kingdom : Steve Parker, : 9781842364802 : Blackwell's       The Human Body for Kids | Bones ...

This term, our exciting topic is The Animal Kingdom! The children will be exploring both humans and animals, learning all about how living things grow, function, and are grouped. Through this topic we will be linking our Science, Geography and Art.

Our Summer 1 focus will see the children learning about the human body, identifying and naming body parts and organs, and finding out more about their function. They will explore the five senses and investigate how we use them to understand the world around us. In Geography, they will be developing their knowledge and understanding of the United Kingdom, including its four countries, capital cities and surrounding waters. Through this they will also learn and use vocabulary related to human and physical features.

Summer 2 will see a shift towards learning about animals with a special visit from The Animal Man, giving the children a hands-on experience and sparking their curiosity for the weeks ahead. They will discover a range of animals and begin to classify them into groups, such as mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The children will also classify animals based on whether they are omnivores, herbivores or carnivores.  The children will continue to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of physical and human features through looking at their local area and making comparisons with a seaside location.

To find out more about our Year 1 curriculum for the autumn term, have a look at our curriculum leaflet which you will find in the 'Curriculum' section of our website.

Classes will have a weekly PE lesson. These will be on the following days:

Spring 1

1C - Friday
1P – Tuesday

1R - Thursday

Please ensure that your child has a named P.E kit in school (white t-shirt, blue shorts and black pumps).  We ask that long hair is tied back, and that earrings are not worn on your child’s P.E days (children will have to wear tape over earrings if they have been left in on their P.E day).

Spellings

Spellings will be given out to the children every half-term and will be checked on Fridays. Children will be taught different spelling patterns and rules closely linked to our Phonics lessons at school. Additionally, you can help your child to learn the 'common exception words.' These are the words the children are expected to read and spell correctly. You will find links to the common exception and high frequency words, together with spelling lists, in the section below (useful links). Your child can also practise their spellings using SpellingFrame.co.uk which is a brilliant tool to help support your child's spelling at home. You will find their log-in details on the inside cover of their reading diary.

Reading books

Please hear your child read regularly throughout the week and comment in their reading diary.  It is essential that books are sent into school every day. It is beneficial for your child to have their reading books available on additional days, as we have a volunteer reader in school every Wednesday and staff may also hear children read throughout the week. Your child will have their reading books changed on the day shown below:

1C - Monday
1P – Thursday
1R - Monday

Online Learning

Your child will have received individual login details for Purple Mash, Spelling Frame and Numbots. These can be found on the inside cover of their reading diary. These can be used to access many useful games and activities.
