The units of writing this term will be a wishes story, a newspaper report and an explanation text. The children will practise different sentence types which will include: de: de, superlatives, 2A sentences, verbs (-ing and –ly), BOYS sentences (but, or, yet, so), time conjunctions and causal conjunctions.  There will be opportunities to identify and use adverbs, similes, alliteration, metaphors and personification. In comprehension and guided reading lessons, the children will be reading a range of text types to practise inference, summarising, retrieval and word meaning skills in both independent and group tasks. The children will continue to practise SPaG skills, by using the following correctly: pronouns, apostrophes for possession/contraction and proofreading to make sure that words make sense in their sentences.

Our topic is ...

Invaders and Settlers

This topic is about having a good knowledge and understanding of the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and their relationship to early British history. Throughout the topic, we aim to encourage the children to think critically about different perspectives and ask relevant questions to further their knowledge.

Through this topic we will be linking our historical knowledge of early invaders and settlers, to our artwork and DT work. We will be creating Roman shields in art and looking at Italian food.

Our educational visit will be to ‘The Lunt’ Roman Fort. This will provide children with the opportunity to recognise and understand what life was like for a Roman soldier. They will have the opportunity to explore the Roman Fort and participate in parade ground drills.

Homework

The homework each week will be:

Maths Flex - your child will have a maths flex log in, please log in each week to complete the set work which builds on the learning your children have been doing in class.

Spellings tests. The children will have spellings within the spelling booklet provided and these will be tested on a Thursday. If you find they have forgotten them, there are always spare copies in the classroom. Just ask the class teacher.

You can also practise your spellings on 'Spellingframe' using your log in, follow the link here - 'Spellingframe'

Reading books. The children have school reading books. Please read with your child at home and record in the reading diary. All children are responsible for changing their own reading book, story time or first thing in the morning.  Reading diaries will be checked by the class teacher on Thursday, so please ensure your child has their reading record in school.

TT Rockstars. Please log on as frequently as possible to practise and earn points.

Statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

In June, Year 4 pupils will be required to take the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The check is to test if children can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is important for fully accessing many areas of the Mathematics curriculum throughout Key Stage 2, and beyond. The MTC is an on-screen check with 25 times tables questions. Children will have six seconds to answer each question. The check should take around five minutes to complete. Children have been practising their times tables on a regular basis with their class teachers using a range of teaching and learning tools such as games, songs and www.ttrockstars.com, which they can also access at home too.
