Dear Year 1
The children in Year 1 have been working hard to learn songs for our upcoming Disney show. As it has been a short half term, we have saved the songs to our Video Resource Centre so you can help your child to learn and practise each of the songs. The show will be taking place on 16th April - more details will be sent out in due course.

In the next R.E lesson, children will be taking part in a sharing activity which will include chocolate buttons. The children will be allowed to eat the chocolate buttons.
Plant based and gluten free chocolate will be available for any children with dietary requirements.
Please speak to your child’s class teach if you have any questions.
Many thanks for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers,
In a recent survey carried out at Parents Evening, it was clear that you would like some support in helping your children at home with their reading and maths work. With this in mind, there will be some workshops held where we will explain how reading and maths are taught and how you can support your children further at home.

Monday 26th February
9:00am - 9:45am or 3:20pm - 4:00pm with Mrs Kaur
Early Reading support from Phonics through to fluent reading.
This session will help you, help us ensure your child will read fluently upon leaving Key Stage 1.
Support will be given in the type of questions you can ask to support your child develop their understanding of texts as well as their fluency. Tips and advice on supporting children with their phonics will also be provided.
Maths
Monday 4th March
9:00am - 9:45am or 3:20pm - 4:00pm with Mrs Johnson
Early Maths
This session will show you the methods we use in our mastery approach to maths.
Support will be given in showing how we use resources, pictures and calculations to develop your children's depth of understanding and fluency in maths. We will also show the methods we use for calculations using all four operations.
Please book the session you would like to attend online via ParentPay so we can ensure we have sufficient resources for you to join in in what will hopefully be fun and interactive support sessions.
These workshops will be recorded and available online should you not be available to attend.
We look forward to seeing you.
Mrs Johnson and Mrs Kaur

Dear Parents and carers,
Here at Abbey, vocabulary is a key component of our curriculum.
At the beginning of our non-core lessons, the children are shown key words to discuss, and to activate prior knowledge. These words are regularly revisited and referred to in order to help them become embedded in your child’s long-term memory.
In order to further promote a rich vocabulary for our children, lists of subject specific vocabulary have been put together so that you can play a part in helping your child to learn, understand and make good use of this vocabulary.
You can find these lists on our website on the Year 1 and Year 2 class pages, under the heading ‘Subject Specific Language’. Your child will also be bringing home a hard copy. At points throughout the year, Kahoot quizzes will be set for your child to complete at home to show off their super understanding!
Having a good understanding of this vocabulary will certainly support your child’s success across the curriculum.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mrs R Phillips

Please can we remind you that school meals are free for all children at Abbey Infants.
At the beginning of September, as the cost of the lunches change, the ParentPay accounts may show a school meal debt.
Please ignore this - you do not need to pay.
We have contacted ParentPay to rectify this.
Many thanks,

Dear Parents and carers,
Year One are planning their party day on Wednesday 19th July. Children are invited to wear their own party clothes on this day or they could wear animal print, to tie in with our Science topic – the choice is yours!
We are asking children to provide their own party snacks to be eaten in the afternoon. This is in addition to the daily school meal provided/packed lunch that your child would normally have. Please ensure that food is nut free, for the safety of all of our children.
Your child will be able to enjoy a session on the school bouncy castle. Please inform your class teacher if you do not wish them to take part in this activity.
In addition, on Friday 21st July, children will be watching a film in their classroom. More details to follow, if we require permission.
Thank you for your support,
Year One staff.

Dear parents and carers,
It is with regret that we have to cancel the Year 1 Educational Visit to 'All things wild'.
Most of our educational visits rely on generous parental voluntary contributions. Any shortfall is made up by external funding or our Friends of Abbey PTA.
Unfortunately, this trip is not financially viable - we have to balance very carefully the demands on our budget. Cost of living affects us all.
This will not affect your child's learning of the curriculum. All educational visits are to supplement and enhance our core offer. Whilst disappointing, the children all will enjoy an animal visitor later this term too.
You can find our policy on charges to trips here https://shorturl.at/bklpB
Many thanks
Dr. R Kentish

Dear Parents/Carers,
We are writing to inform you that due to COVID and the disruption to learning over the past 2 years, we have decided as a team to change the Disney production this year to allow children to catch up with other areas of the curriculum. Due to timescales, we feel it would not be feasible to rehearse and perform a live production, that the children would be proud of and enjoy. Rather than put the children through the pressure of learning lines, dances and songs in a short period of time, we have decided that our Year 1 Disney Production will be a simplified recorded version, with the children singing and dancing some of their favourite Disney songs.
I do hope you understand that the decision has not been taken lightly and we recognise that some parents may be disappointed, but we feel the time required to complete a performance of quality would take away the children from exciting curriculum we have planned, for too long creating further gaps. I am sure you understand that the children are working incredibly hard to close the gaps which were created throughout lockdown and we would like to continue with this in a consistent manner.
Please rest assured that we are making the curriculum engaging and exciting for the children and as part of this we look forward to welcoming you to our Design and Technology Day on Friday 1st April.
As the production will not be live, you will be contacted when the video is available to watch on the Abbey Federation website. If you do not wish for your child to be filmed for the video that will be uploaded to the video resource centre, please email y1@abbey-inf.sandwell.sch.uk to let staff know. If this is the case, your child will not be visible in the video, but will still take part in learning the dances and songs.
If we do hear from you by Monday 14th March 2022, we will take your photo consent from the Data Collection Form you completed this academic year.
Thank you for your continued support.
