English

This term we will continue to use Talk4Writing to expand the children's knowledge of text and sentence types. The genres that we will focus on are narrative fiction, writing a piece based on a balanced argument, exploring a persuasive brochure as well as poetry. There will be an emphasis on developing creative, independent and increasingly sophisticated writing along with the use of a wide range of punctuation marks and vocabulary. We will continue to develop a cursive handwriting style. The children will continue  developing their use of conjunctions, apostrophes for possession and contraction, expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbial clauses. Reading will be promoted through daily guided reading, daily story time sessions as well as a weekly reading comprehension session. We will also be focusing on speed and fluency.

Mathematics

This term, the children will continue to develop their multiplication and division strategies. They will practise multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers by a single-digit number, dividing with remainders, and applying these skills to a range of problem-solving activities. We will also explore decimals, including tenths and hundredths, and learn how to divide by ten and one hundred. The children will study fractions and measures, including the measurement of area, length, and perimeter. They will learn how to calculate and compare lengths and perimeters of different shapes. Throughout all areas of learning, the children will focus on developing their fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Our topic is ...

Imaginary Worlds

Through this topic we will be linking our Geography, History, Art, Design and Technology and English work.

We will explore Imaginary Worlds created by famous authors and film-makers and then go on to write about and create our own imaginary worlds through diaries, encyclopaedia entries about imaginary animals and beasts and quest stories set in imaginary lands.

We will discover the history of map making and how the map of the world changed with the discovery of the ‘new world’. The children will explore artists and authors of the sci-fi genre, discuss if their ideas came true and create artwork in their style.

Children will also be exploring the locality of Warley Woods, completing walks and planning their routes, as well as creating scale maps of their imaginary worlds and looking back through time – imagining what the woods looked like at different points in the past.

Homework

The homework each week will be:

Spelling Tests
Children will be given a hard copy of their spellings each week, and these are also available to download from the school website. Spellings will be tested every Thursday.

If your child forgets their copy, spare ones are always available in the classroom—just ask the class teacher.

You can also practise spellings online using your ‘Spellingframe’ login. Follow the link here: Spellingframe.

You can also practise your spellings online using your 'Spellingframe' login. Follow the link here: 'Spellingframe'

If you go to the bottom of the page, you are able to download the Spellings for this term.

Reading Books and Diaries

Each child has a school reading book. Please read with your child at home and record this in their reading diary.

Children are responsible for changing their own reading book, either at story time or first thing in the morning.

Reading diaries will be checked by the class teacher every Thursday. However, it is important that children bring their reading diary into school every day, as plans may change or they may have the opportunity to read with an adult.

TT Rockstars
Please encourage your child to log in to TT Rockstars as often as possible.

Regular practice will help them build confidence with their times tables while earning points and rewards along the way.

Statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

In June, Year 4 pupils will be required to take the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The check is to test if children can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is important for fully accessing many areas of the Mathematics curriculum throughout Key Stage 2, and beyond. The MTC is an on-screen check with 25 times tables questions. Children will have six seconds to answer each question. The check should take around five minutes to complete. Children have been practising their times tables on a regular basis with their class teachers using a range of teaching and learning tools such as games, songs and www.ttrockstars.com, which they can also access at home too.

PE

Swimming

Swimming lessons will take place every Friday. We will be leaving school promptly at 9:00am, so please make sure your child arrives on time.

Children must bring the correct swimming kit each week. A swimming cap is strongly recommended, especially during the winter months, as it helps keep hair dry and warm. Please remember that we do not have any hair-drying facilities at the pool.

Jewellery must not be worn for swimming, and children with verrucas should wear swimming socks.

PE

PE kits should be in school at all times. Children will take them home at half-term to be washed and ready for the next half-term. The kits should include: a white t-shirt, royal blue shorts and black PE pumps. Plain black or navy jogging bottoms can be worn in the winter.

This term we will be focusing on Volleyball and Dance.
