3. RK asked the children to return to classes and ask what sort of theme we would like for the next disco. Lots of ideas were shared and this included music. Children need to ask their classes before the next meeting and bring ideas back in their school council books. RK to order school council badges.
4. Children discussed the amount of time for lunch time clubs. RK explained that classes rotated being 1st to last - this means that if the rotation is fair then some days the time will be long, other days short. Children also asked about the number of choices at the end of lunch time. RK explain that in a perfect world there should be three choices but sometimes, if any particular dish is really popular, there may only be two. Children had individual pictures taken for the school notice board and website.

3. RK asked for the feedback about the disco. In a vote of 13:3, children in classes wanted to have a 'scary dress-up' theme to the disco. RK explained that in a democracy, we go with the majority vote and so in this case the children have decided upon the theme. RK explained that we don't want anything too scary and nasty but appropriate costumes is fine - if children choose not too, that too is fine. ACTION - Y6 to come to RK to write a letter on behalf of the school council to explain their decision.

Skirts under dresses for KS2 at playtime.

A sensible discussion took place about why this may or may not be required. Children agreed (KS2) to ask their classes the thoughts of the children. As with the disco theme, the school would agree to go with the majority view of the children.

RK fed back on reading club and was going to look to do this after XMAS. RK fed back on the art provision and clubs within the curriculum and explained that over the time the children were at the school that a broad balanced curriculum was in place and that whilst there might be less art in some year groups, others had more. This was also the same for trips.
4. Each representative fed back the feelings of the children on this issues. It became clear that most children wanted to be able to wear their shorts under skirts; others did not want to. The school council decided to leave this up to personal choice.
5. The children elected their own chairperson and secretary (to co-run the school council with RK & NB at first); these were Simran as Chairperson and Jenni as secretary (both in Y6).

3. RK informed the school council SIPS Fresh had met with him to look at the kitchen issues and changes to the menu for Tuck Time. Following the new nutritional guidelines it means that some dishes are no longer allowed (e.g. Bagel with cream cheese) therefore there would be changes but the school is awaiting the final menu. Additionally, children need to be sensible about the quantity of food purchased and this will also need some more regulation to follow guidance.
4. Behaviour management - RK explained his intention to review and re-write the behaviour management policy. To do so he wanted to hear from all the children on the following points:
a) How do children want to be rewarded for following our agreed rules?
b) What do we think the sanctions should be for not following our rules?
c) How should we deal with any bullying to make sure that people know what is and what is not bullying and how to make sure that we deal with it appropriately.

School council write to local MP.
THE PEN IS TRULY MIGHTIER
An Abbey pupil is demonstrating a keen interest in current affairs and politics and has written to our local MP. When Tallulah Saunders, 4P, learnt of John Spellar's recent decision in Westminster to vote to take military action in Syria, she was really upset and wrote him a letter expressing her concerns. In it, she asked him to reconsider until he was sure he had evidence, as there were no guarantees innocent people, including children, would not be hurt or killed. Mr Spellar has written back to Tallulah, explaining the reasons for his decision, and hoping she will continue to take an interest in the wider world.
Thanks to Talulah & Tallulah’s Mom for the story.

Classes fed-back to RK and requested the following sports:
Cricket, volleyball, dodgeball, handball, tennis, badminton, squash, rounders, basketball.
Rk stated that the range of active sport is great but that some of the sports involve only 2/4 children i.e. badminton and so would be less keen on these because there are 360 who may like to play.
The school council would also like this to be used on a class by class/group basis.
UKS2 would like to have a roll on-roll off 5/6 aside competition for playtime, Mr McGowan has suggested that he would organise a mini-league to support this.
Action: RK to take the list to lunchtime supervisors to arrange a programme of sport; School council to ask Mr McGowan if he can help with the league.
2. Ideas for the e-safety video.
School council spilt into groups and generated ideas. The ideas are summarised as:
Texting safely; On-lne gaming safe rules and the consequences of not following this/how to avoid it; Sending a positive message of how to rather than 'thou shalt not' for whichever aspect we film; Avoiding requests for chat/friends of people that we don't know; You-Tube comments; Bullying through game chat; CEOP (RK added this one).

School council meeting 26-4-17
1. School dinners.
RK explained that he wanted to add the comments from the pupil survey and make a finished list of what issues we would like to bring up with the school cook, Mrs Williams.
From before half term the list was:
Poor quality fish. Sometimes the food appears to have strange ingredients; Wider choice of food on the menu (roast dinner/burgers (chicken/beef); Onion with burgers; more themed days; Pizza overload of sauce sometimes and a range of pizza; Only one vegetarian option (jacket) - better selection for vegesaurs; unbalanced sandwich filling (sometimes a lot, sometimes little) and poor quality bacon.
We'd like to question the amount of tuck that people are allowed. Sometimes prefer fries to fat chips. Explore a wider range condiments.
Additions from class discussions and surveys are:
Consistency of pizza topping. The portion size is too small e.g. in one particular class where 8 children stopped having dinners, for 6/8 (75%) stopped because they felt that the dinners were not great value for money. Thicker gravy. Ingredient mixture. Many children felt that there were times when the food was not cooked (chips, fish, pizza, chicken), sometimes overcooked too.
Positives: nice meatballs, breakfast at Playden, fish fingers, sausages, range of deserts.
Action: RK to invite the cook to the next school council meeting to discuss the meal provision.
Date and time of next meeting. Wednesday 10th May.
Dear Dawn,
I am writing to you on behalf of our School Council to invite both you and Mrs Williams to our meeting on Wednesday 10th May. Normally we meet in the morning but it is the Y6 test week and so they won't be able to attend. I would like all of my children here and so I wonder if we could meet in the afternoon, after the lunch period and before Mrs Williams goes home. Would 2pm be acceptable?
I look forward to your reply and will show my School Council.
Best Wishes,
Richard.

In the example, not everyone agreed but when a vote was held, the majority decision was the supported without people arguing or falling out.

RK used the recent example of not supporting 'Children in Need'.
School council representatives to talk to classes and identify one charity/theme/good cause that each class would like to be taken forward. Each school councillor will thne bring each idea and pitch it to the wider school council group for a whole council decision. 1. RRS Articles
RK shared his vision for the school and linked it to the RRS articles. Each child then looked individually or in small groups at the RRS articles. Everyone had a discussion about which ones they thought were really important or meant a lot to them. Each child (or groups) filmed their ideas. These ideas to be merged into a video for the assembly on Monday 10th February.
Action: RK to talk to MO about making the video, upload to this page. Assembly on Monday 10th.
Unicef works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

There would also be a digital version for saving Earth's resources.
