The Masked Reader
On Thursday, it is World Book Day, so you will see lots of activities and links on here this week related to reading. As we can't all be in school at the moment, we're doing something a little different this year. All of the teachers have disguised themselves whilst reading a short story or an extract from a book! Do you think you will be able to unmask each of the readers?
Click on this link to find more information and watch all of the videos: https://www.abbeyfederation.co.uk/world-book-day-2021/
Answers will be revealed on Friday, so you can take your time listening to the stories throughout the week. You will have seen from our timetable this week that we are dedicating our story time sessions to the Masked reader.
Happy reading!!!
One of the Art activities on Thursday will require an egg box and some paint. If you wish to complete this art activity then make sure you try to save a couple of egg boxes ready for Thursday's lesson. (If you don't have these resources at home- don't worry- there will be alternative Art activities for you to complete.)

AM Session 1: Maths (Create your own board game)
Create your own Maths board game
Your task today is to plan and create a Maths board game which can be played. This means that you have to carefully consider a number of things in order to produce a game which at the end can be played.
You may create a whole new game which has never been seen or heard of before, or you may magpie ideas from other well-known games such as monopoly, trivial pursuit or snakes & ladders.
We have attached a planning sheet below to help you plan out your board game carefully. Thinking about your rules, layout, the theme, the objective and what you will need for the game.
Here are some ideas to help you (I'll attach the pictures in a document below).

Opening 1
Jack had been climbing for most of the morning. Step after slippery step, he had made his way up to the top of the beanstalk. Several times, when the wind picked up, he had feared he might lose his footing and fall to his death. He had dared to look down on one occasion, seeing that his house was the size of an ant far below. Now that he had finally reached his goal and clambered up to the land of _______________________, Jack had no idea what to do next! “____________________________” a voice as loud as a foghorn boomed out from high above him. Jack took a deep breath...
Opening 2
Down, down, down she went, deeper into the rabbit hole. It seemed like she had been falling for an eternity, as if time had slowed almost to a stand-still. She moved through the air as if through water, the fragments of dust and light filling her vision. She opened her mouth to scream, but the voice that spoke was not her own. What was this place? Would she ever land?

In the resources section below, you will find a book review template. You could choose a book that you have recently read, or complete it based on your favourite ever book.

You may use Epic books (the links and information are stated above) or any books you have at home. We want you to get creative with where you read your book. You may choose to read your book in the garden, build a den/fort, in the shed, on the sofa or maybe even take a walk to your local park... basically wherever (just make sure you check with a grown up first)! Take a picture of you reading your book or listening to an audio book and post it to your Padlet page! We can't wait to see them!

You have two options to choose from. Or if you wish, you may do both. Miss Humphries has made an extra video for those of you who have found adding fractions tricky. Read both options below.
Option 1 (Arithmetic session): You will need the 100 club resource from below. You will be looking at a range of calculations and exploring a range of strategies to solve these questions. This week we will be focusing on the four operations as well as the fraction work we have completed this week. Miss Humphries will take you through a few example questions then you will have 20 minutes to solve the questions. Remember if you finish early try using the inverse to check your answers.

Option 2 (Recap session): If you have found this week tricky or didn't understand how to add fractions. Miss Humphries is going to model step by step how to add fractions with different denominators. Your task is to answer the ten questions Miss Humphries has set for you. The lesson has been added to the resources section below so you can make notes or show your workings out to the questions Miss Humphries models. This is optional, you do not need to print this off. The sheet and the answers are attached below in the resources section.

AM Session 2: English
In today's lesson, you will be writing up your persuasive brochures in neat (like you would in school in your WOW write). You have the opportunity to be creative and present your brochure however you would like. You may want to just purely write it up in your best handwriting (editing as you go) on lined paper, fold a piece of a4 paper in to the style of a leaflet/brochure or even use a publishing software on your computer to do this. There is even a tool on PurpleMash where you can create your own leaflet from scratch. Below are some examples to inspire you:
There is a also a selection of leaflet templates for you to use in the resources section below.

Assembly:
Today's assembly is brought to you by Mrs Flanagan and today she is talking about 'resilience'. There has never been a time in recent history, where so much resilience has been needed by so many people - you included! We have all had to adapt to the new way of working and learning over the past year and if one thing is for sure... we have all been very resilient. Mrs Flanagan has also put together a lovely video showing how 'unstoppable' we have been and have we have managed to work together and get through this year as a team! You may even spot yourself in the video if you look closely! We hope you enjoy it!

AM Session 1: Maths
In today's Maths lesson, you will still be adding fractions over one. Miss Humphries will model to you another strategy you can use to add fractions over one. You will be looking at the most efficient methods. Today there isn't a purple sheet, everyone has the same task to do which is sheet one, sheet two and two challenges. This is because you can decide which strategy you would like to use (unless the question states otherwise).

AM Session 2: English
In today's English lesson, you will be completing both your third and fourth sub-headed paragraphs of your persuasive brochures, in order for you to complete your final piece on Friday. This will be a chance for you to write up your brochure in your best handwriting (WOW Write style) and add any extras and colour to them. For those working from home, you may want to get creative and use your computers to create your brochures! Mr Postin will also prepare some templates for you to use in preparation for tomorrow's lesson.

PM Session: Science
This is our final Science lesson in our Space unit of work and so today we are going to find out what it's like to be an astronaut in space. We will be looking at what training they need to go through, the effect Space has on their body, why they need to wear a space suit and we even get a quick look at Tim Peake's space walk. There is lots to learn!
Your first task is to find out what a day in the life of an astronaut would be like. You can choose to display your work however you want. Here are some ideas: a mind map, a short paragraph, a video, a presentation, a poster, a leaflet or a diary entry from the perspective of an astronaut- it's totally up to you so be as creative as you want!
To help you complete this task there is an astronaut FAQ document in the resources below. This is a really useful document with lots of fascinating facts so make sure you take a look.
Or you can find it here: https://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/pdf/569954main_astronaut%20_FAQ.pdf
We have also been really lucky to receive the link to an interview with Tim Peake!!! A big thank you to Mr Crockford for helping us out with that! Here is the download link: https://we.tl/t-HWrRQRgWLp This is only available for the next few days so make sure you watch it when you've got some free time- you won't regret it!
Science challenge
In the final part of today's Space lesson, we are going to celebrate the very recent and successful landing of the Mars rover- Perseverance (which landed last Thursday evening). After learning about Perseverance and watching it's landing, you will be given the opportunity to complete your very own challenge, to design your own Mars rover.
Have a look at the actual Perseverance rover here for some inspiration:
https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/
https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/spacecraft/rover/
https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/spacecraft/rover/body/
There is a document in the resources section below to help you set out your design, if you wish to use this.
Remember this challenge doesn't have to be completed in one day. Take your time as there is a lot to think about.
Don't forget to send in your work when you're happy with your final design.
Have fun!!!

AM session 1 Maths:
We are starting a brand new unit based on more fractions! As we have finished a unit, this means you will need to do your end of unit check. You have two options; you can do it in your Maths lesson or we have allowed you time during fluency to do it then. Follow the link to the Google form and submit your answers. Please only attempt this once and please make sure you put your full name and class.
In today's Maths lesson, you will be adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. To start with, you will be recapping on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators. These are skills you have covered in Year 3 and 4 so you should be relatively confident with this. You will be finding a common denominator in order to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. All of the resources are below under 'Monday's resources'. There are two options for your first sheets (purple or black- do not do both), a second sheet and two challenges to complete for today's lesson.

In today's English lesson, you are going to be conducting some independent research about the place/object/venue that you would like to write about in your persuasive brochure after half-term. We are also going to be looking at existing slogans to inspire you to create a slogan of your own!
Here are some possible ideas for your persuasive brochure:
- Chester Zoo
- National Space Centre
- A country of your choice
- A holiday resort / Cruise Ship
- Your own planet that you created in your Science lesson on Wednesday
- A football stadium
- Cadbury World
These are just ideas and you are more than welcome to think of a completely different idea, as long as you feel confident you will have enough to write about (enough for an introduction and 3 sub-headed paragraphs)

AM Session 1: Maths
In today's Maths lesson, you will be recognising fractions as divisions. You will be interpreting a range of questions and showing how fractions can viewed as a division. Miss Humphries will model some strategies to show you what the questions mean and how to interpret different questions. The key today is 'not to over complicate it' (see how many times Miss Humphries says this phrase in her lesson). You have two options for the first sheets (purple or black- do not do both as they are similar style questions, purple sheet has more scaffolds and visual representations), a second sheet and just one challenge to complete today.

AM Session 2: English
In today's lesson, we are going to be continuing to develop our persuasive writing skills. To begin with, we are going to be looking at the difference between synonyms and antonyms, before going on to up-level your writing using the most adventurous and persuasive synonyms possible! Following this, we are going to be looking at a 'bad' example of persuasive writing, which was written about a property that is for sale. It is your job to take on the role of an estate agent and create a persuasive leaflet that will help to sell this pretty terrible property!

PM Session: Fluency
Countdown
It works exactly like the TV programme. Choose 6 numbers and press the target number. You can use any of the four operations (multiplication, division, addition or subtraction) but you can only use the numbers once. As a challenge, can you use all of the numbers to make the target number? Or you may add a timer, the TV show allows contestants to have 30 seconds.
If you want, you can ask your grown ups or siblings to join and turn it into a mini competition of who can make the target number first.
Link to the game: http://happysoft.org.uk/countdown/numgame.php
PM Session: History
Today we are learning about the final Tudor monarch- Queen Elizabeth I. We are going to take a look at some of the problems she faced while she was the Queen of England. In your first task, you are going to become the Queen's advisor and give your own opinions on which choices Elizabeth should have made as Queen. At the end of this task, you will find out whether you would have made a good advisor or not! Using all that you have found out in the Queen's advisor task, you should then come to a conclusion on which problem you think was the biggest problem for Elizabeth.
Your final task is to compare the two Queen Elizabeth's. Feel free to use the internet to help you research fascinating facts about both Queens.
There is a History resource to write your responses on, if you wish to use it- if you haven't got a printer do not worry, just write your responses on a piece of paper.

In today's English lesson, we are moving away from poetry and beginning our unit on 'persuasive writing'. In today's lesson, you will be completing a 'cold write', which means you are going to be writing a piece of persuasive writing with very little guidance from us. This is to see what you remember about the features and content of a persuasive piece of writing and for your teacher to assess the difference in your writing from this piece, to your finished piece at the very end of this unit.
Your writing is going to be about the 'Air Hotel 3000', which can be seen pictured below!

I haven't given you much detail because I would like you to be as creative as you can. We will be featuring some of the posters on our website so please sent them in by the end of half term (21.02.21) labelled 'Forest School Challenge 1'.
Extra points for doing research on your park (this can be done online or by going to the park) and for including a picture or drawing of your park or something in it, as well as the overall design of the poster. You can use any method to create your poster including pens and pencils or designing it on a computer (if you can come up with any other creative ways to make your poster I would love to see them).
PM Session 1: RE
In today's RE lesson, we are going to have a look at another bible story called 'Jesus cleanses the temple.' You are going to consider the feelings from different characters in the story and try to understand why Jesus reacted the way he did. There are many interpretations of this story so we would like you to sort out the most likely meanings of the story and the least likely meanings of the story in the diamond nine activity. The worksheet is available in today's resource section if you wish to download it to complete the cut and stick activity.

No story time today due to social sessions.
Good morning Year 5, we hope you are all well and safe.
We were all very sad to hear about the passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore (02.02.21). What a truly inspirational man raising so much money for our NHS and helping others in a time of need. We would like to send all of our thoughts to his family and friends.
However, this makes our picture even more important today. We felt the quote on the picture from Sir Tom Moore was something we all needed to hear.
We must remember we are all finding these strange times difficult at the moment but we will get through this together. Remember we are always here for you if you ever need to talk to us.
We just wanted to say we are so proud of you all and everyone is doing such a great job!
Huge thank you to parents/carers for your continued support too.

We are continuing our 2Code unit of work on Purple Mash, so make sure you have your usernames and passwords ready. In today's lesson, we are looking at the 'if' command.
Task 1- Complete Guard the castle (gibbon) app. This level includes using the 'if' command. Remember to watch the tutorials (or use the hints) at the beginning of each level as they will help you.
Task 2- Can you design and create the 'plane task' (this is displayed in today's lesson and in the resources section). This task gives you a chance to experiment and play around with different events and commands. If you're feeling confident then try to complete it independently; if you feel like you need some more support, continue to watch the lesson as Mrs Falconer shows you how to complete the first few steps. Have fun!

Here is a beautiful reverse poem which was sent in to us yesterday.
Dyslexia
I am stupid and dumb.
So don’t try to tell me that
I am smart
Just imagine!
I am cursed
And it is simply not true that
I am talented in so many ways
Because
I will never get a good job
And it’s a lie to say
I am great.

PM Session: Computing
In computing today, you have been set 3 tasks to complete on Purple Mash. Watch the lesson and Mrs Falconer will tell you when to complete each task.
Starter- 2Do- Internet safety. Your first task is all about Internet Safety. We begin the lesson with a reminder of our very important SMART message and you will then be given the task to think about which behaviours are safe and which are unsafe.
Task 1- 2DO- Random Words and Wizards app. This app teaches you how to use the 'word' and 'timer' coding blocks. Make sure you are following the instructions for each level and if you don’t feel too confident make sure you watch the tutorial video at the start of each challenge (this will help you).
Challenge- Can you predict what will happen when you run the codes? You have been given a sheet with 3 different codes. Have a look at each code carefully and take note of what each coding block says. Make a prediction of what will happen when you run this code. Then, put the code into 'Free code Gorilla' to find out if your prediction was correct. If you can't download or print the sheet- don't worry, each code is shown in the lesson.

AM Session 1: Maths
We are aware a few of you didn't understand the long multiplication method yesterday so we have made two videos and lessons for you today. There are two options and two videos for today's Maths (description below). Please choose one!
Option 1: You will be going over yesterday's lesson of multiplying a two digit number by a two digit number. We are aware a few of you have struggled so we have made an additional video for you. During this option, there are no anchor tasks, it is purely modelling the long multiplication method alongside the grid method for you to practise each method. There are two sheets for you to complete with a challenge at the end.
Link to session option 1 session: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/thursday-21st-january-option-1-maths
Option 2: If you have understood yesterday's lesson then this is the option for you. You will be multiplying a three digit number by a two digit number. You will be using the long multiplication method as well as the grid method. You have the purple worksheet with more scaffolds and the black sheet where the scaffolds are reduced. You have a second sheet and two challenges to complete.
Link to option 2 session: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/thursday-20th-january-option-2-maths
All of the resources are labelled below either 'option 1' or 'option 2', please make sure you choose the correct sheets for the correct lesson.
AM Session 2: English
Today you will be continuing with your independent balanced discussions that you started planning on Monday. On Tuesday, you should have written your introduction and today we will be focusing on the 'arguments for' paragraph.
Your SPaG starter today focusses on prepositions and there are a number of activities for you to complete. There is no need to worry about printing anything out today, as all of the activities will be on the screen for you to pause and complete when necessary. Make sure you have your planning sheets to hand and play close attention to the toolkit and WAGOLL that are there to help you with your own paragraph.

Let the battles commence!
The battles have been set across your classes. The battle starts at 8:30am and will finish at 10:00pm on 21.01.2021. Who will win the battles? Who will contribute the most points? Which class will have the most contributors? Keep your eyes peeled for the results. Good luck .
PM Session: History
In today's History lesson, we are going to be learning about the English Reformation and how it all started. We will begin the lesson by learning about a priest called Martin Luther, who influenced the creation of the Protestant Church in Germany.
In your first task, you will be looking at the differences between the Catholic and Protestant Churches and will be sorting out statements according to which Church they belong to. (There is a resource in today's resource section if you want to cut and stick the statements or you can simply pause the lesson and write down your answers on paper.)
In the second part of the lesson, we are going to be looking into the reasons of why King Henry VIII decided to break away from the Catholic Church and become the head of the Church of England (Protestant church). Your final task is to give your own opinion on what you think the real reason was for Henry VIII breaking away from the Catholic Church.

AM Session 1: Maths
In today's lesson, you will be multiplying by a two digit number but learning a new strategy which is the long multiplication method. All of the previous methods are in preparation for long multiplication. In the resources section below, there are place value columns/cards to help you with the fluency starter. Also, Miss Humphries has attached the greater depth question and the answers to that too if you fancy a challenge. There is a purple and black sheet for sheet number one (choose which one you feel more comfortable with), a second sheet and two challenges. Make sure you mark all of your answers so you can go back and see where you went wrong and correct your mistakes accordingly. Remember this is important because this is how we learn and move forwards in our learning. If you are finding the long multiplication method tricky, remember to go back through the video and re-watch some of Miss Humphries' modelling.
Link to the lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/wednesday-20th-january-maths
AM Session 2: Reading Comprehension
Today's reading comprehension is based around an extract from The Jungle Book called 'Mowgli is rescued'. Read the text carefully and answer the questions that appear on the screen towards the end of the video. You will notice that for your starter today, there is an audio clip that you need to listen to. In the lesson video, this cuts off for some unknown reason, so I have attached a link to the audio here: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/audio-clip-for-comprehension-starter
For those who find today's text tricky, I have also attached another comprehension in the resources section below, which is based on deadly animals and creatures.
Here is a link to today's lesson video: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/wednesday-20th-january-reading-comprehension
PM Session: Fluency
You may need to rope in someone's help!
Write the numbers 1-12 on separate pieces of paper. Choose a times table of your choice. Get the grown up to hold up one card at a time. Whatever card they hold up you must say the product as quick as you can. Any hesitation and you will have to start again! How many times tables can you get through? Which times tables do you know very well? Which times tables do you need to practise? Challenge: How quickly can you get through a times table?
For example, Miss Humphries and Mrs Falconer are playing the game. Miss Humphries will hold the cards and Mrs Falconer is shouting the product out. Mrs Falconer has chosen the '7 times table'. Miss Humphries holds up the card '9', Mrs Falconer has to work out '9x7' as quick as she can and shout it out. As soon as she shouts the answer out, Miss Humphries then holds up another card. Keep going until all of the cards have gone.
PM Session: Science
Our big question is why does the Moon appear to change shape? In today's lesson, we are going to be learning about the Moon's orbit and the phases of the Lunar cycle. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to name the different phases of the Moon and explain the difference between a waxing moon and a waning moon.
Be prepared as there is a lot of information to take in today, so remember to pause the lesson whenever you need to if you need to take notes (your notes will help you in your final tasks).
Link to the Science lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/wednesday-20th-january-science
If you would like to find out what phase of the Lunar Cycle the Moon is in, have a look at the Lunar calendar.

Story time:
During today's story time, you will be listening to chapter 13 of Awful Auntie by David Walliams. Once you have listened to the chapter, there will be some questions for you to answer. These can be seen on the screen at the end of the video, or alternatively, you can find the questions below:
u1. What was lighting up the cellar at the beginning of the chapter?
u2. What was the figure wearing?
u3. What job did the Soot used to have?
u4. Soot was abandoned as a baby, do you know of any other children in the book so far who have disappeared or been abandoned?
u5. What does it mean to be ‘brown bread’?
Finished? Why not draw what you think Soot looks like?

AM Session 1: Maths
In today's Maths session, you will be exploring multiplying by two digit numbers (part two). You will be taught another strategy to help you multiply by a two digit number. We are building up to the short multiplication method but first it is important to recognise the place value within the multiplicand/multiplier. In the lesson, Miss Humphries will take you through some examples to help you break down each calculation and to multiply by easier numbers in order to find the overall product. As always, there are two options for the first sheet (purple and black), a second sheet and two challenges. Please find all of the resources below under 'Tuesday's Resources'.

AM Session 2: English
In today's English lesson, you are going to be looking at words that contain silent letters during your SPaG starter. Your spelling test is based around this on Friday, so it will be a very useful activity for you to complete. Following this, you will then be writing an introduction to the balanced discussion that you started planning during yesterday's lesson. Why not be creative and present your discussion through a video, PowerPoint presentation or write it using Word. These will help you to develop your technology and typing skills, as well as your discussion/debating skills.

PM Session: Art
This week, we are going to be looking at the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We are sticking to the theme of portraits but this time with a twist! Watch today's lesson to find out more about Arcimboldo's portraits. We would like you to choose one piece of Arcimboldo's work to write about. Once you have chosen your favourite piece, you will be given some questions to answer. (These questions will be available in the resource section below, if you can't print them off then just pause the lesson while you answer the questions on the screen.)
Challenge/Extension task: Can you recreate your own example of Arcimboldo's work using household objects (fruit, vegetables, utensils, leaves)? Remember you must ask your parents/carers permission before you do this!
Link to the Art lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/tuesday-19th-january-art
Story time:
During today's story time, you will continue to listen to Awful Auntie by David Walliams.
Today you have two tasks. Task 1, is to complete the questions on the screen after listening to chapter 11. You can write these down if you wish, but just discussing them with someone in your house in absolutely fine too! The questions can be found on the screen at the end of the chapter, or alternatively, you can find them below:
After chapter 12, there is an activity sheet for you to fill in all about 'Cockney rhyming slang'. Cockney rhyming slang (named after the people who first used it, the ‘Cockneys’ of London’s East End) is a type of slang that replaces common words with rhymes or phrases. Often the word in the expression that rhymes with the original word is dropped. For example: ‘lies’ becomes ‘porky pies’ becomes ‘porkies’.
The activity sheet can be found below in the resources section.

AM Session 1: Maths
In today's Maths session, we are moving onto multiplying a number by a two digit number. The first strategy we are going to explore is the grid method. This will start to break down multiplying by a two digit number into smaller steps and give you a better understanding of the place value and the process before moving onto the short multiplication method. All of the resources you will need are below under 'Monday's resources'. Remember there are two options for the first sheets, have a look at both and choose whichever option suits you. Try not to take the easier option straight away and try to challenge yourself. There is a second sheet to complete and three challenges.
Link to the session: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/monday-18th-january-maths
PM Session 2: English
In today's English lesson, you are going to be given the task of researching and planning your own balanced discussion. To do this, you are going to be given a planning sheet that is going to help outline both sides of the argument. This plan is going to be very helpful to you over the course of the week, so it's worth completing this in as much detail as possible. The planning sheet can be found in the resources section below, or alternatively you can pause the video at the relevant times and write your plan down in a notepad or on a piece of paper.
In the video, there will be some suggestions of discussion questions that could be used. However, these are just ideas and you do not have to choose one of these discussions if you do not wish to.

AM Session 1: Maths
In today's Maths lesson, we are starting a new unit on multiplication and division. We are focussing on multiplying up to a four digit number by a one digit number. Miss Humphries will take you through a range of strategies that you may want to use in today's lesson. Don't forget you can replay the lesson at any time if you haven't understood a strategy. There is an 'end of unit check' to complete too, which is based on the previous unit of 'Area and perimeter'. Please try to complete this independently, so we can get a picture of what you have understood/not understood from the previous unit. The answers will be posted below, see which ones you didn't get correct and see whether you can spot your mistake (at this point a parent/carer can help you). All of the resources you will need are below under the heading of 'Thursday's resources'. There are two options for sheet number one (purple and black), there is sheet number two to complete and three challenges. Try not to opt for the purple sheet straight away, try to challenge yourself!

PM session: Fluency
As there has been a lot of work to complete in Maths today. We will allow you time to go through your 'End of unit check' and see what you haven't understood. See whether you can spot your mistake and rectify what you have done. If you have completed this, then you may go on any of the games we have set you this week or logon to 'Times Table Rockstars' to have a go at your times tables.
PM Session: History
Today, we are learning about the infamous Henry VIII and his 6 wives. We will be looking at his reasons for marrying his wives as well as his reasons for ending the marriages. While watching the lesson, make sure you try to take a few notes as there is quite a lot of information to remember.
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to name Henry VIII’s six wives and put them in chronological order.
Your task is to create a fact file on each wife including the following information: name, children (if they had any), religious views, how and why their marriage ended and any other interesting information. You can choose to present this however you like (there are templates if you wish to use them).
The History resource below includes: fact file templates (A4 and A5 size), portraits, and quotes from his wives.
This may take a while to complete, so we understand if you want to continue this task over a couple of days.

Technology is playing a huge part in remote learning at the moment and when it used correctly and sensibly, the internet can be a wonderful place. You can conduct research, watch your lesson videos, videos for entertainment and you can also interact with your friends in numerous ways. As you are currently spending a lot more time online at the moment, it is really important to remind yourself of the 'SMART' message, to ensure that you are keeping yourself safe.
Hello Year 5, we are half way through the week. How's home learning going for you? We hope you and your families are staying safe and are well! At some point in the next few days, we will be contacting you and your families just to check in and see how you are all doing.
Let's see what we have planned for you today.
Assembly:
AM Session 1: Maths
In today's Maths session, you will be estimating the area of irregular 2D shapes. You will be exploring what estimation means and looking at strategies to calculate the area. All of the resources you will need are listed below under 'Wednesday's resources'. Please note there isn't a purple sheet today. The questions start off with more of a scaffold and as you work through the sheets the scaffolds are taken away. There are two sheets and two challenges for you to complete today.
Link for the lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/wednesday-13th-january-maths
AM Session 2: Reading Comprehension
In this lesson, you will developing your inference and predictions skills. To do this, you will be looking at a series of short video clips and pictures - This can be a great way to practise using inference. As there are often no or little words in pictures, this means that you will have to look for clues in order to answer the questions, just like you would when inferring information from a piece of writing.
There is a worksheet for you to use during this lesson but it is no essential that you print it. You can always pause the screen and answer the questions on a lined piece of paper. Here is a link to today's lesson video: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/wednesday-13th-jan-comprehension-inference
PM Session: Fluency
In today's fluency session, you will need to access 'Hit the button'. Focus on 'mixed times tables' and 'mixed division facts'. Play the games a few times and see whether you can beat your score. Good luck!

PM Session: Science
Our second lesson of our space unit is all about how day and night is formed. There are clips and diagrams in the video that explains the movement of Earth and why the sun appears to move across the sky.
You have been given two task to complete.
Task 1- Watch the first part of this lesson before completing this task. Can you explain how day and night is formed? You can do this by writing your explanation down and drawing diagrams or you can become a presenter and record/make a video of you explaining how day and night is formed. If you feel like you need more help with this activity, there is a 'Task 1- help sheet' in today’s resource section (below).
Task 2- Use the 'Science- Task 2' sheet (below). Draw the sun at certain times of the day. Think carefully about the direction of the Sun's path. In what direction does the sun rise and set? Then draw/explain the difference in the shadows of the tree as the time changes.
Challenge- Can you complete the 2 challenges we have set for you at the end of today’s lesson? Find them in the resource section (below).

Link for today’s Maths lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/thursdays-maths-lesson-070121
AM Session 2- English:
Today's English lesson is based around 'wishes'. This past year has been a strange one to say the very least and the things that we used to be able to do freely every single day (such as going to the park with your friends),do not seem to be as easy at this moment in time. This lesson will be looking at this and how our hopes and wishes may have changed a little from this time last year. We will also be thinking about things that we used to take for granted that are now so important to us.
To complete this lesson you will need a piece of paper and pen.
Here is a link to the lesson video: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/thursday-7th-jan-english-wishes
PM Session- Fluency:
Today's fluency session is based on 'TTRockstars'. We have set battles across all the classes (starting at 8:30am until 11:00pm). You have today to try and be the 'TTRockstars' champions! Who will win? Which class will get the highest amount of points? We will post the results tomorrow!
PM Session- History:
In History, we are going to begin our Tudor topic. We will start by naming and ordering the reign of the 6 Tudor monarchs. By the end of this lesson, you will have created a timeline of events throughout the Tudor period, focusing on the changes of monarchs and other significant events. The resources for this lesson are in today's resource section: Timeline template and Timeline events. However, if you can't print these off, don't worry- the resources are all on today's video lesson, so you can just pause the video at appropriate times.
Finding it a little tricky?
Just choose 6 events from the cards and order them chronologically on the timeline.
Top tip:
Your timeline could turn out to be quite big, if you include all of the events, so perhaps display it over a couple of sheet of paper or a double page in your notepad.
Challenge yourself!
Once you have completed your timeline, there is an opportunity to challenge yourself by choosing three events from your timeline and researching them further. For example: Can you tell us what the Mary Rose was and who did it belong to? What was the Spanish Armada? Why did Lady Jane Grey only reign for 9 days?
Link to History lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/thursday-7th-january-history
Story time:
During today's story time session, you will continue listening to chapters 2 and 3 of Awful Auntie by David Walliams. After listening to each chapter, you will then be asked to answer a series of questions.
These questions can be found on the screen during the video, as well as below:
Chapter 2 -
1. Aunt Alberta is one of three children, but is she:
a) The eldest b) the youngest child c) a triplet
2. What are the names of her two brothers?
3. What does it mean if something is a mystery?
4. What did Aunt Alberta think had happened to Herbert?
5. Why do you think Lord and Lady Saxby were never seen in public again?
Chapter 3 -
1. Why do you think that Alberta was so mean to her younger brother, Chester?
2. Name 3 mean things that Alberta did to Chester. (There are lots of these)
3. What did Chester give to his sister, Alberta?
4. What was Alberta’s ‘dangerous obsession’?
5. Do you think it is a good thing to always let somebody win at a game to save them getting upset? Why do you think this?

You will see that today's lesson is a little different to your 'usual' Maths lesson. Today, you are going to be given a number of problem solving cards to work through. These will not tell you what operation or method you need to use... this is for you to figure out. Mr Postin will take you through an example of a problem and how he would go about solving it and then it's over to you! There are 8 problems in total, all getting progressively more challenging. Do not worry if you do not complete all 8... some are quite time consuming and you will need to show resilience today!
Here is a link to today's lesson video: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/mondays-maths-problem-solving
For this lesson you will need: some paper, a pencil, access to the problem solving cards and some coins if you have some at home!
AM Session 2: English
Today, we want you to watch a short clip from the film 'The Polar Express.' This particular scene gives you plenty of opportunity to describe the setting, the character's thoughts and feelings as well as their senses. This week, you will be writing your own version of the scene so use today's lesson to mind map your initial ideas. As we are creating suspense, we have attached a 'suspense word bank' in the resource section to help you.
Remember to challenge yourself by writing down examples of figurative language. Use the English resource sheets to help you plan your ideas and watch the scene back as many times as you need to.

PM Session- Design Technology:
In today's DT lesson, you will be designing your own Christmas Eve plate. If you do not celebrate Christmas, this is absolutely fine you can design a treat plate of some kind. You will be evaluating existing designs that are already out there and recognising the importance of this. You will need to think about the materials you will need. Lastly, you will then design your own plate. You will need to consider your target audience and what makes your product unique. For today's lesson, you will need pencil and paper. The resources for the lesson are attached below, if you wish to print these out.

PM Session 2- Forest School:
Time to take yourselves outside!
Mr Pogson has set you some little tasks to do outside. Here are some pictures to show you what he would like you to make.
1. Christmas tree- this is made of sticks in your garden and rope/string. Then, attach a piece of rope to the top to hang it onto a tree in your garden.
2. Pine cones- Find a pine cone in your garden. Decorate it however you like. Make sure you don't use glitter as this is harmful to the environment. Attach a piece of string to the top and hang it in your garden as a decoration.
3. Scavenger hunt- Find the document below (winter spotter sheet) that outlines a list of items for you to find in your garden or outdoor space. You can turn this into a little competition with your siblings or grown ups. Can you find all of the items on the list?
Have fun outdoors and don't forget to post a picture to Padlet or send us an email to let us know how you got on !

Friday 4th December 2020
Hello Year 5, how are you all doing today? IT'S FRIDAYYYYY! What a week it has been. Just wanted to say a massive well done to you all at how well you have adapted and just got on with remote learning- so thank you! Thank you for all of the work you have sent in so far, make sure you keep sending it to us via Padlet or email. It's nearly the weekend, which means you all deserve a much needed rest (especially your parents/carers)!
Let's see what the plan is today!
Assembly:
During today's assembly session, we would like you to complete this week's spelling test on the suffixes -ant and -ent.
Here is a link to today's spelling test video: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/fridays-spelling-test
In the video, Mr Postin will read each word twice, place each word in to a sentence for you and put an image on the screen to help you picture the context of how each word is being used.
Don't forget to let your class teachers know how you got on, either via the Padlet or the y5@abbey-jun.sandwell.sch.uk email address.
AM Session 1- Maths:
Today we are going to be completing your weekly catch up session that we would usually do in school on a Friday morning. This lesson will look to consolidate and develop your knowledge of fractions and in particular, your use of common multiples to simplify fractions.
A link to today's video lesson is here: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/fridays-maths-catch-up-lesson
There are some worksheets and challenges for you to work through in the resources section below. To complete this lesson you will need a piece of paper/notepad, a pencil and access to today's worksheets.
AM Session 2- Reading comprehension:
Today, we are going to focus on our skills of inference. There are some mini activities for you to complete throughout your online lesson. Once you have finished watching the lesson, your main task is to complete a task in your CGP comprehension books. If you haven't got your CGP books with you today, there is an extra comprehension text in the resource section below called 'Cole's Kingdom,' for you to complete.
Your task:
Link to the lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/friday-reading-comprehension
PM Session- Fluency:
In today's fluency session, we would like you to follow the link below to 'Daily 10'. You may choose which level you would like to complete- no lower than level 4 please! Try to challenge yourself! We would like you to focus on the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Make a note of your scores and send them to us via Padlet or email.
Link to the game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
PM Session- Computing:
Today's lesson will focus on exploring and getting to grips with 'thing link'. Before the lesson you will need to sign up to 'thing link', it is free to do. Your parents/carers may need to help you with this. You will be making a mini 'thing link' and really thinking about content and design features. We have started this lesson in school but as you're in groups to complete this task, we felt this was an opportunity to get to grips with the website and what it can do. This will inform your designing and planning process when we get back to school.
Please note you will need an access code when you sign up:
Access code 5F: BBZVBM
Access code 5P: BX6ZXB
Access code 5H: NUCT23
UPDATE: We are aware there are some issues with 'Thinglink'. We do apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Here are some alternatives for you to do:
Could 5P complete the 'Sport England Survey' please? This is stated on the website.
Kind regards, Year 5 Teachers

MESSAGE TO 5P CHILDREN:
Whilst completing your Computing lesson this afternoon, this would be the perfect opportunity for you to complete the Sport England Active Lives survey. A link to the survey was emailed to your parents/carers at the beginning of the week. This will only take you around 15-20 minutes to complete and will ask you some multiple choice questions about your experience of sport in school. It is important that we get as many responses as possible, as only two classes in the whole school have been selected for this survey... and you are one of them! :)

Hello Year 5, we hope you are all well and ready for 'Day 2 of Remote Learning'. We are finally in December, so we hope you have opened your Advent calendars this morning!
A huge thank you for sending us your work so far via email or on Padlet. We are enjoying reading your work. One week to go and we will be back together and in our classrooms where we belong.
Polite notice about Padlet:
Please make sure you are posting appropriate and kind content on Padlet. We are noticing some of the posts are not relevant to the work that has been set or you are having a general chat with your friend. We do not mind people commenting positive or constructive feedback on other people's posts but it must be about the work that has been set or something school work based- not a general chat that is not appropriate or relevant to the original post. Don't forget every that time you comment on a friend's post, your teacher is notified of the post. Anything that is not relevant, we will have to remove the content. We do not want to turn the commenting feature off but if this continues we may have to. On one post alone yesterday, there were 355 comments (at the time of writing this). As you can imagine, we have to go through all of these comments just in case someone needs our help or someone has shared their work. Remember we only have a week to go and we will see each other again.

AM Session 2: English
This week, we are continuing to learn how to create suspense in our writing. In today's lesson we are going to be using descriptive language to create a setting. Mrs Falconer will model examples and explain how to describe an effective setting, hopefully this will help you write your own description of an eerie setting. Throughout the lesson, there will be times when you need to pause the video to complete a task so listen out for when Mrs Falconer tells you to do so. For this lesson, you will need: a pen/pencil, paper and the Image prompt that is in the resource section below (Monday- English resource).
If you find this lesson a bit too tricky, you can use the English help resource sheet. On this sheet, we would like you to just describe what your character can, see, hear, smell and feel in this setting. There is a challenge on the sheet for you to write 3 or 4 descriptive sentences independently.
Link to the English lesson: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/english-monday-30th-november
Here is a link to help you with writing subordinate clauses. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbnw7nb

PM Session: Fluency
There will be a new activity a day. Your first fluency session is based on 'TTRockstars'. We have set battles across all the classes. You have today to try and be the 'TTRockstars' champions! Which class is it going to be? We will post the results tomorrow!
PM Session: Science
During this session, you will be exploring oxidisation and rusting. You will be planning a fair test based on the corrosion of metals. You could test a range of things which will be outlined in the lesson. One idea is that you may want to explore what speeds up corrosion through different types of liquids. To complete this task, watch the video titled 'Science 30.11.2020' on the 'Video resource centre'. Please find the link for the video below.
