"I never seen that before," said Malcolm. "Strange."
So neatly and finely made were the threads that he had to turn it a dozen times before the two parts fell open. There was a piece of paper inside, folded up as small as it could go: that very thin kind of paper that Bibles were printed on.

At first sight it was an acorn, but it was oddly heavy, and when he looked more closely, he saw that it was carved out of a piece of tight-grained wood. Two pieces, in fact: one for the cup, whose surface was carved into an exact replica of the rough overlapping scales of a real one and stained very lightly with green, and one for the nut, which was polished and waxed a perfect glossy light brown. It was beautiful, and she was right: it had to be the thing the man had lost.

GUIDED READING:
Her name was Mrs. Pratchett. She was a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a green gooseberry. She never smiled. She never welcomed us when we went in. By far the most loathsome thing about Mrs. Pratchett was the filth that clung about her. Her apron was grey and greasy. Her blouse had bits of breakfast all over it, toast crumbs and tea stains and splotches of dried egg yolk. It was her hands , however, that disturbed us most. They were disgusting. They were black with dirt and grime. They looked as though they had been putting lumps of coal on the fire all day long. The mere sight of her grimy right hand with its black fingernails digging an ounce of Chocolate Fudge out of the jar would have caused a starving tramp to go running from the shop.
1. Decide if these statements are true or false
Mrs Pratchett’s mouth was green.
Mrs Pratchett was unwelcoming
Mrs Pratchett put lumps of coal on the fire throughout the day
2.………would have caused a starving tramp to go running from the shop.

GUIDED READING:
The winter solstice takes place around the 21st of December every year in the top half of the Earth which is called the northern hemisphere.. It is the day when there is the shortest amount of daylight and the longest night.
What Is a Solstice?
A solstice only happens because the Earth is tilted at an angle. This means that as the Earth orbits the Sun, sometimes the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, getting more light and heat and sometimes it is tilted away from the Sun, making it darker and colder. When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, it is summer. When it is tilted away, it is winter. A solstice is when either summer or winter reaches its peak. The summer solstice is the point when there is the most light and the winter solstice is the point of least light.
1. What is the name of the top half of the Earth?
2. A solstice can only happen because of what?
3. How much sunlight is there at the North Pole during the winter solstice?
4. Which of these words is closest in meaning to the word ‘reaches its peak’?

Miss Hood
What a big appetite you have!
Do not kill the animals! It is strictly forbidden.
I admit to being able to understand about the pheasants, but the rabbits pushed it too far.
When you continue to murder and devour the deer, you build yourself quite a reputation. Now the boars are vanishing - animals are queuing up outside my office to report that they are scared.
You are making my job very hard. The system in The Woods is surprisingly fragile, and it is up to me to stop it from falling into chaos. Do not make me ask you to leave.

GUIDED READING:
Aunt Sponge was enormously fat and very short. She had small piggy eyes, a sunken mouth, and one of those white flabby faces that looked exactly as though it had been boiled. She was like a great white soggy overboiled cabbage.
Aunt Spiker, on the other hand, was lean and tall and bony, and she wore steel-rimmed spectacles that fixed on to the end of her nose with a clip. She had a screeching voice and long wet narrow lips, and whenever she got angry or excited, little flecks of spit would come shooting out of her mouth as she talked.
1. In what way are Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker different?
2. Find and copy one word or phrase meaning piercing?
3. How could you tell if Aunt Spiker was irritated?

GUIDED READING:
Dear Miss
Welcome to The Woods!
We hope you enjoy living in this picturesque log cabin that the animals have graciously donated to you. The Woods are certainly colder than where you have come from - I'd like you to accept this red hood and basket of seeds and foodstuff.
Your cabin is as close to your Grandma as we could find possible, as we know she is the reason you moved.
I am certain you will adore The Woods. The animals that live here are all pleasant folk, and the scenery could be straight from a fairy tale!
Wishing you a delightful day.
Mr. Wolf
Mr. Wolf
Yeah thanks for the cabin, though it's not the biggest house I've ever seen.
Shame you didn't put us any closer to Grandma...
Dear Miss Hood
I hope you love The Woods as much as I do!
A friendly reminder - please don't pick the wild flowers. They are grown in specific order. My teams of birds are experts in the botanical business, and they ensure The Woods look perfect. If you pick any flower, it ruins the pattern.
Mr. Wolf
Inference -
How would you describe Mr Wolf’s personality?
Use at least two different adjectives justifying your answer with evidence from the text
How would you describe Miss Hood’s character?
Justify your answer with evidence from the text

Within, stood a tall old man, clean shaven save for a long white moustache, and clad in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour about him anywhere….He moved impulsively forward, and holding out his hand grasped mine with a strength which made me wince, an effect which was not lessened by the fact that it seemed as cold as ice–more like the hand of a dead than a living man.

A bellow of laughter resounded beyond the chamber, and in another moment a giant, redheaded warrior rolled in at the side of Adaon. He towered above all in the chamber and his beard flamed around a face so scarred with old wounds it was impossible to tell where one began and another ended. His nose had been battered to his cheekbones; his heavy forehead was nearly lost in a fierce tangle of eyebrows; and his neck seemed as thick as Taran’s waist.
1. What evidence is there that the warrior had a large number of scars on his face?
2. He towered above all in the chamber
What impression does this phrase give about the warrior
3.Other than the scars, what other evidence is there that the warrior had been in many fights?
