IMPORTANT NOTICE
Friday of this week (29th), your child's class teacher will be holding a class social session via Microsoft Teams.
On Thursday, it is World Book Day, so you will see lots of activities and links on here this week related to reading. As we can’t all be in school at the moment, we’re doing something a little different this year. All of the teachers have disguised themselves whilst reading a short story or an extract from a book! Do you think you will be able to unmask each of the readers?
Click on this link to find more information and watch all of the videos:
https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/playlist/world-book-day-2021
Answers will be revealed on Friday, so you can take your time listening to the stories throughout the week.
Happy reading!
For next week (week commencing 1.3.21) you will need the following things for topic:
*Broad bean seed or any other seed to grow a stalk.
*a cup/container or small pot.
*cotton wool or soil
*a straw (optional-to help the stalk grow)
For Creative you will need:
Friday 5th March
Good morning Reception!
For today's reading related activity we would like you to try and build yourself a reading den. It could be indoors or outdoors. You could use anything to make your den. Some ideas for indoors could be using, quilts and pillows, chairs with blankets over, covers hanging over the sides of tables. If you are outdoors you might like to use sticks or branches if you can find any on the ground. Please can you send us a photo of yourself in your den or in an unusual place where you might not usually read such as in a basket, on a trampoline or in your shed if you have one. Please check with your adults before you use any objects from around your house and check with your adult that your unusual place to read your book is safe. Below are a couple of photos to help give you some ideas.
Bookmarks
Another activity you might like to do is to make your own bookmark. You just need a strip of card or a lollipop stick and decorate it however you like.
Today you will have Phonics, English, Maths, Music and a story.
We hope you have enjoyed all the activities and stories set for World Book day and the other subjects.
Don't forget to follow this link for World Book Day to see who all the masked readers are:

Topic
Today in Topic you will grow your beanstalk following the instructions below with your grown-up, you can design your own castle on plain paper and cut it out to stick on the straw, you can add your straw today too (it's in step 8 but you can do it before you start this activity).
The simplest way to start growing a beanstalk is :
1. To start with a glass jar or other container/cup and some cotton balls.
2. Run the cotton balls under water until they are wet but not sodden.
3. Place the wet cotton balls in the bottom of the jar/cup/container. These are going to act as “magic” soil.
4. Place the bean seeds between the cotton balls at the side of the glass so they can be easily viewed.
5. Be sure to use 2-3 seeds just in case one doesn’t germinate.
6. Keep the cotton balls moist everyday by misting them with a spray bottle or pouring a tiny amount of water everyday.
7. Once the bean plant has reached the top of the jar, it is time to transplant it. Gently remove the bean plant from the jar. Transplant it into a container that has drainage holes. (If you started out with a container like this, you can skip this part.)
8. Add a trellis/straw/stakes and lightly tie the end of the vine to them using plant ties or twine or string. Keep the beanstalk project consistently moist and watch it reach for the clouds!
You can decide where it would be appropriate to put your beanstalk in the house and share why it would be appropriate with your grown up. You could also measure it over time too using a ruler/measuring tape.
Here is a bean time-lapse video to show you what could happen if you take care of your beanstalk, you can talk about what the plant will need over time: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/2321-topic-bean-time-lapse

PSED
Target: I understand that I need to exercise to keep my body healthy.
Grown up to play ‘Guess which sport/activity I am’. Give the children clues and see if they can guess which sport you're thinking of: e.g. "there is a ball in my game, you play it with lots of friends, it needs lots of space, the ball is the size of an apple, you use a wooden bat. What game am I?" answer: cricket
Can you share a photo/certificates/ badges of what your favourite sport/exercise/physical activity is outside of school via email/padlet and tell your class teachers about your experiences and achievments. This could be riding a bike, swimming, dancing, yoga etc.
Possible questions:
What happens to your bodies when you exercise? Does anything change?
Quick experiment: jump up and down as quickly as they can for one minute. (Have a timer available for children to grasp concept of the length of a minute -you can use your phone or this google link)https://www.google.com/search?q=one+minute+timer&rlz=1C1ONGR_en-GBGB937GB937&oq=one+minute+timer&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l9.2627j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
How do you feel now/what changes have happened?
Grown ups to talk about how exercise strengthens your heart, helps blood pump around the body (and raises oxygen levels), this helps us keep healthy and lowers our chances of becoming ill...
This is a nice fun video of practising to dance (which is an exercise!) you can have a go at dancing if you like! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhfkYzUwYFk

Maths
Good morning everyone,
Super Maths work yesterday, we are so pleased with how well you measured the length of different objects.
Let’s start with another practice of our number formation, see the attached picture to help you write numbers 0-9.
Use the Number Formation information below to help you write your numbers.
Number Formation
Around to the left to find my hero, back to the top, I've made zero.
A downward stroke, my that's fun. Now I've made a number one.
Half a heart says, "I love you." Add a line. Now I've made the number two.
Around the tree, around the tree, now I've made the number three.
Down and across and down once more, now I've made the number four.
Down the back and around the belly. Draw the hat. It's a five. Watch out it might come alive!
Bend down low to pick up sticks. Now I've made the number six.
Across the sky and down from heaven. Now I've made the number seven.
Make an 's' and close the gate. Now you've made the number eight.
Make an oval and a line. Now I've made the number nine.
Today we are going to be looking at measuring the height of different objects. Can you look at the video below for today’s lesson please?
https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/maths-5-2-21
Activity: Can you find objects around the house that you would like to measure the height? You can use anything to measure them such as blocks or toys, just stack them up and count how many objects tall they are.
Have a look at the picture below to give you an idea!
Don’t forget to post on the class padlet page or email your work in.
Have a great day!

PSED
Target: I can explore different occupations
Grown ups can write down different occupations on a piece of paper and cut around them, children are to pick one and role play different occupations during play, you can use dressing up clothes and have fun!
Possible occupations: nurse, police, teacher, doctor, painter, driver, builder, baker etc.
Discussion (10 minutes with a grown up)
What would we need to do now to help us get that job in the future? What things do we need to learn to help us achieve our dream job? e.g. if they picked out being a teacher they would need to learn to read and write; if they picked out builder, they would need to know about measuring; if they picked out painting; they would need to know how to hold a paint brush.
Story
Today's story includes some woodland animals. We hope you enjoy it. It's called 'After the Storm.' Follow the link below to Listen to it:
https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/4221-story-after-the-storm
After the story you could try and find some things from your garden or maybe when you go for your daily exercise to build a house for a cuddly toy. You could use objects from around your house if you'd prefer. Remember to ask an adult before you pick up anything when you are out and about or if it's not yours in the house. We'd love to see some photographs of your houses. Have fun!

PSED discussion time with a grown up
Target: I can use kind words to encourage people
Read the following scenario to children:
Anna was building a tall tower on the carpet area, her friend Inayah approaches her and says
“your tower isn’t big!”
“it’s not good, I don’t think you’re good at building!” Anna feels upset and leaves.
As a class or with your grown-up at home, talk about how that situation could be made better and share your ideas. Possible questions: How do you feel when people say horrible things to you? How do you feel when someone says something nice to you? Can you say something good about your friend/family? Can you encourage others?

Some children might need extra support in recognising initial sounds to words by speaking sounds out aloud, practising certain phase 2 or phase 3 sounds which they find difficult, blending shorter words (e.g. hoot), practising tricky words-phase 2 or phase3 or even blending words that are a bit longer than CVC words (e.g. branch).
Your class teachers are very impressed with your efforts in reading and are very proud of you!

We used paper plates as the base but you could ask an adult to help you cut a circle or semi circle piece of card from any old boxes you might have. Remember to check with an adult what you can use. You could colour, paint or stick things on to decorate it. Maybe you might like to make a mask for a different character in the story.
You might like to try making a box monster. Here are some examples using tissue boxes, cereal boxes and boxes that have flip lids to give you ideas:
Remember you don't need to do all of the creative activities but we'd love to see what you try.
Please keep posting to the padlet or send us an e-mail of what you try.

After the lesson you can visit phonics play.com and play 'Flashcards Speed Trial'.
Scroll down to 'Flashcards Speed Trial'. First practise Phase 2. How fast can you do them? Then you can pick individual graphemes all of Phase 2 and all phase 3 except 'ure.' You can add more sounds gradually. If you are finding any digraphs difficult do the speed trial with some digraphs and keep adding more as you become more confident. Keep practising!
English
Good morning children!
A lot of you enjoyed reading and ordering words into a sentence. It's great seeing you apply your phonics knowledge.
Today for English, you will order words in a simple sentence again using your phonics knowledge, grown-ups can write the words down on a piece of paper and cut around them, muddle them up and then you can order the words in a sentence.
The sentence is "He had a black tongue and purple prickles on his back."

PSED
Discussion time
Target: I can set a goal and work towards it.
Grown ups to act out building a tower/having a go at an activity and then make it fall down/leave it incomplete. Don’t rebuild it and say that you’re giving up and leave it. Then sit looking bored, saying things like you can’t do it, it’s too hard…
What will happen if you don’t try and give up easily on everything? Discuss how there are things we may not be good at and want to get better at. Give some examples of things they could work at in school or at home. E.g. concentrate for 5 minutes on a task, help to tidy up etc.
Give the children some thinking time to think of something they want to get better at. Possible questions to ask: What will happen if we don’t try and give up easily on everything? What would you do? How can you achieve your goal?
Get children to share their idea of what they would like to get better at. Explain how this is going to become their goal. Write the children’s ideas down for future reference on a piece of paper/post-it note. You can post your goals on the class padlet

Good morning everyone.
A super week of learning 2D shapes! The teachers are really impressed with the work you have done. A big thank you for completing the activities that were set this week. We have enjoyed seeing them through our e-mail, Padlet page or Education City account.
Here is a 2D shape hunt song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElQoMOCJw8w
Mrs Appleby has also made a fantastic video for you: https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/maths-15-1-21
Activity: Can you have a look around your house and see what things are shaped like a rectangle, square, triangle or circle?
You can post this on the class padlet page or email us.
You can also logon to your Purple Mash account – Mathematics – Scroll down to Paint Projects – Basic Shapes/Round Things/Rectangular Things/Triangular Things

Music
We are going to start by revisiting our Gruffalo song from last week by following the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSc4TQshebk
Have any of you learnt it yet? I'm sure some of you have. Sorry grown-ups if you're hearing the song a lot or you find yourself singing or humming the song all the time!
I've been making some sounds at home with my children. Which character from the story could they be for: the Gruffalo, mouse, fox, snake or owl?
Follow the link below to the video to hear the sounds:
https://abbey-federation.primarysite.media/media/music-sounds-15121
After you have listened to and discussed the sounds can you play a game with someone in your house? Choose 6 things you can make a noise with for example scrunch up a crisp packet, tap on a box or shake cereal in a box. You can have items that make a similar sound to make it more challenging if you want to. You could even make your own shaker if you have time using an empty bottle or box and putting tiny stones, pieces of pasta or rice in them, (see photos below the game). Make sure you put the lids on before you shake them. You may need an adult to help you stick the lids on tight with sellotape so they don't come off! Please make sure you check with a grown-up before you use things that are not yours.
Game:
You stand one side of a door or behind a curtain or chair where the other person can hear you but not see you. Make a noise with one of your objects. The other person in your house needs to try and guess what the noise is. Repeat with the other person making the noise.
Who is better at guessing you or the other person?
Here are some photos of home made shakers to give you some ideas.

Music
Listen to and have a practise of the Gruffalo Song by following the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSc4TQshebk
Now have a think and discuss with your grown-up. What sounds do you think a Gruffalo could make? Have you got anything around your home that could help you make that sound? You could make noises with your mouth or body or use objects inside and outside your home, but don't forget to ask before you use anything that isn't yours.
Repeat the activity with the character of the mouse. Do you think the mouse would make the same noises as the Gruffalo? Why? Why not? What could you use to make mouse noises?
If you're enjoying this activity what other characters from the story could you find noises for? I think there was a snake, an owl and a fox.
Challenge: I can't think of any sounds for a fox, can you?
We'd love to see your ideas for any of the characters from our story on your class padlet or send us an e-mail.
Story
